LaGuardia Plaza Hotel Joins Sustainability Initiative

EAST ELMHURST, NY—LaGuardia Plaza Hotel (LPH), an independent hotel located in the New York City borough of Queens, is participating in the NYC Carbon Challenge for Hotels, a partnership between the city and private sector leaders who have committed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from their buildings by 30% or more in 10 years. The program’s expansion to hotels is a key initiative in Mayor Bill de Blasio’s  10-year plan to put the city on the pathway to achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, according to the hotel.

LPH is the first hotel in Queens to join the initiative; 18 properties throughout the city are already involved. The participating hotels, multifamily buildings, universities, hospitals and commercial offices will implement a diverse range of strategies to achieve the 30% GHG emissions reduction goal, according to LPH.

“LaGuardia Plaza Hotel has always prioritized a positive experience for both our guests and surrounding communities, and the NYC Carbon Challenge is our latest initiative in honoring that principle,” said Stephen Field, ownership representative of LPH and CEO of Synergy Hospitality. “We’re proud to be joining forces with city government to combat climate change by reducing the carbon footprint at LaGuardia Plaza Hotel.”

The improvements made by the participating hotels are projected to reduce citywide GHG emissions by an additional 35,000 metric tons and result in an estimated $25 million in energy cost savings, according to LPH.

According to Synergy Hospitality, in order to meet the Carbon Challenge goals, it worked with Evolution Energy Partners to develop a comprehensive energy efficiency project that will be cash flow positive from day one. Evolution Energy Partners and Synergy selected OpTerra Energy Services to design and install the project, which will include HVAC upgrades, LED lighting with intelligent controls, among other upgrades. The project cost will be embedded in the hotel’s power bills through a four-year supply agreement with Constellation’s Efficiency Made Easy program, requiring zero capital outlay from the hotel.

LPH features nearly 9,000 sq. ft. of newly renovated meeting space and 358 guestrooms.
