Plunge Beach Resort—Lauderdale-by-the-Sea’s retreat and off-the-radar getaway located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean—welcomes Ellen Cohen-Berman as the in-house curator for the hotel’s Plunge Into The Arts program, a new initiative that aims to help local artists flourish, as well as encourage the community to engage in and learn about Greater Fort Lauderdale’s art scene.
In cooperation with Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District partners, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens and History Fort Lauderdale’s New River Artist Cooperative, the recently established Plunge Into The Arts program provides a platform to showcase and support the local arts community at Plunge Beach Resort. The program consists of various artists exhibiting their work in the lobby of the hotel for 30 days, with art styles including watercolor, acrylic, ceramic, photography and more. Select pieces on display are available for purchase through the artist.
Cohen-Berman’s love for the art world began nearly 30 years ago when she designed and sculpted three ceramic public art projects at various schools and playgrounds located in Coral Springs and Parkland, FL. These art projects served as the springboard to Cohen-Berman’s enrollment in ceramic classes at Broward College and Florida Atlantic University, where designing and creating sculptures as well as functional ware out of clay quickly became her passion. Cohen-Berman has also been commissioned for numerous public art projects and was honored with a three-dimensional art award from Broward College for her piece titled “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend.”
In addition to working as a ceramics instructor for Guild Florida, Cohen-Berman currently serves as the ceramic artist, curator and manager of History Fort Lauderdale’s New River Artist Cooperative Artist in Residence Program. The program was created by Cohen-Berman in 2018 and is located on the third floor of the New River Inn, a former hotel that now houses the main museum of local history.
“Ellen Cohen-Berman’s role as in-house curator is essential for the growth of the Plunge Into The Arts program,” said Tom Mulroy, general manager of Plunge Beach Resort. “Her passion and background in the art world will ensure that we meet our goal of selecting artists and work that are unique, thought-provoking and edgy.”
Every other Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m., unless otherwise noted, guests are invited to enjoy an artist open house along with the opportunity to learn more about the featured artist’s history, inspiration and his/her pieces on display. Attendees can enjoy a complimentary glass of wine accompanied by light bites throughout the evening, and on occasion, the open house will include live demonstrations conducted by the featured artist.
