Functional and aesthetically pleasing lighting designs can help set the mood in any space.
Sonneman—A Way of Light
Sonneman—A Way of Light’s Papillons (above) features lighting delicately floating in suspension. Available in several configurations, these light sculptures offer scale to modern primitive environments that playfully allow the activity of movement within its space. Papillons is offered in single, 4-light, 9-light, 13-light, and 24-light versions, with a combination of black, white, red and yellow shades.
Robert Sonneman, founder and chief creative officer, noted, “Inspired by the art of the early century modern masters, I imagined an abstraction and playful quality of whimsical forms interacting in a delicate lighting suspension. Modern shapes in the colors of Mondrian and Miro excite the experience within a contemporary space. Multiple arrangements and color choices expand the notion of sculptural mobiles as the art of utility.”
Kalco Lighting’s Mercer Collection is a novel approach to mid-century modern-inspired design. Featuring an added detail of crystal ball accents to make it uniquely Kalco, this collection’s opal glass shades will cast a warm, ambient glow in a room.
“For the Mercer Collection, we wanted to design a fixture using the G9 LED light source, which gave us the opportunity to use a much smaller glass globe. We also wanted to have the glass balls floating in the frame as if suspended. The juxtaposition of the glass and the crystal suspended together adds extra interest,” said Takayuki Ishii, Kalco product development and design.
British lighting manufacturer Original BTC’s 30th Anniversary collection, Hector 30 features a new Hector 30 Plug, Switch and Cable Wall Light. Available with a black or gray cotton braided cable (originally inspired by the vintage family iron), Hector 30 PSC Wall Light is ideal for soft decorative renovations, and can easily be mounted to the wall like a picture frame and plugged into the outlet, without the need for hardwiring.
Hector 30 builds on one of the brand’s earliest designs, the iconic and best-selling Hector collection, which is still crafted by hand using traditional, unchanged techniques in the U.K. factory where the first prototype was produced nearly 30 years ago. The Hector product family shades and bases are slip-cast molded by hand, then smoothed with sponges before firing, with each component passing through the hands of ten craftspeople, over a period of six days.
“The Hector has become a real classic and backbone to the range we offer. It just seemed right to do something special for the Hector line when celebrating our 30th anniversary. The combination of natural bone china and satin brass adds a new, fresh look and feel to the Hector family. I personally just love the combination of the two materials; the warmth the bone china gives off falls beautifully on the satin brass, which intern brings further warmth. It can bring a touch of glamour to any interior,” said Charlie Bowles, director, Original BTC.
AJ by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen is functional yet modern, and available in table, floor and wall styles. To maximize the lamp’s functionality as a reading light, Jacobsen created a shade that tilts up or down, directing maximum light to where it’s needed. Available in array of 10 bold and neutral colors, this fixture emits enough soft lighting to create an inviting and flattering atmosphere.
“The AJ series is regarded as the design that Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen, is best known for all over the world. His designs transcend time and disciplines. Beyond the 60th anniversary celebration of the SAS Hotel, the reintroduction of the AJ Series’ original finish and the series’ extension ensures the continuity of Arne Jacobsen’s legacy and is a testament to Louis Poulsen’s commitment to good design that is timeless and as relevant today as it was in 1960. The reintroduction of the AJ Royal compliments the hospitality sector with a product that is functional, emitting light where it’s needed, and pleasing to the eye, creating a cozy ambient for human connection. The AJ lamp in Stainless Steel comes as a product offering that is both modern in its personality and timeless in its design,” said Ghazar Kolian, brand and PR manager, North America.
