Interior Designers Share Career Path with Students

NEW YORK—More than 80 students gathered for the IIDA NY Chapter’s Knowledge Forum held on November 23 at the New York School of Interior Design. The event gave students a glimpse into the lives of five interior designers who have taken an unexpected and untraditional path through the design world. The discussion, titled “The Road I Took,” allowed students to see just how wide and diverse the opportunities presented to interior designers can be.

Each panelist started by sharing their educational background, work history, current job and how they came to be in this position. The moderators then asked the panelists questions about their work experience, which sparked a bigger conversation about their career choices. The five panelists came from a variety of design markets, including hospitality.

The panelists agreed that the best advice they could give students is to listen to their instincts when it comes to making career decisions. An unexpected job role can surprise you: if they’re lucky, this learning experience might just turn into the stepping-stone for their career.

This event was based on what students wanted to hear about: the IIDA NY Chapter student committee was polled earlier in the year to choose a topic for the forum’s next event. This discussion was aimed to provide students with a better understanding of and access to what life is like as a working professional and the decisions they can make along the way to be successful.
