YUCATAN, MEXICO—Commune Hotels + Resorts and Thor Urbana have tapped New York-based design firm ICRAVE to design Thompson Playa del Carmen located in this peninsula.
Scheduled to open in 2015, the over 300,000-sq.-ft., mixed-use space will be the first-of-its-kind hotel and beach club in the area to also feature shopping, nightlife and dining. With 90 guest suites and a rooftop pool, the development will also be the only hotel to have both a beachfront and a central Fifth Avenue location in the heart of the city.
ICRAVE’s design concept is intended to appeal to adventure seekers with a cosmopolitan and nomadic lifestyle. Thompson Hotels’ newest outpost, as a brand known for their sleek design and energetic spaces, will provide a modern blend of materials that balance polished luxury with local, handcrafted finishings. ICRAVE plans to create an environment for guests that pair the intimacy of a beach retreat with the modern vibrancy of urban living.
“Playa del Carmen–the fastest growing resort town in recent years in terms of GDP per capita, new employment, local population and tourism–is a vibrant resort destination with an authentic Mexican charm that receives an eclectic mix of visitors from diverse cities in Mexico as well as from international destinations like the United States, Canada, Europe, South America and Asia,” stated Jaime Fasja and Jimmy Arakanji, Co-CEOs at Thor Urbana. “We are very excited to be developing a world class project in the epicenter of Playa that will offer a fun and unique experience to all its shoppers, hotel guests and visitors.”
“We’re excited to be working with Commune Hotels + Resorts and Thor Urbana to bring to life the newest outpost for Thompson Hotels,” stated Siobhan Barry, partner and project designer at ICRAVE.
“Our design intention is to create a destination hotel that combines the vibrant and bohemian spirit of Playa del Carmen with the energy and edginess of the Thompson brand.”
