CONCEPT: The design of the 107-room Holiday Inn Dumfries, a new construction hotel in Quantico Center, VA, was based on the newly developed prototype for the brand. Using that prototype as a guide, the hotel’s owner and manager, Cary, NC-based RevPAR Management Co., turned to Griffin, GA-based Hatchett Hospitality to design the property.
“The majority of the hotels in the market are much more traditional in terms of their design,” said Pete Patel, senior vp, development for RevPAR Management Co. “As a result, we wanted to go contemporary for the hotel using bright colors to create a really fresh look— nothing too crazy, but we wanted to do something different.”
EXECUTION: Owner and design firm worked together to develop two distinct color schemes for the hotel that would help to create unique looks for the guestrooms and the lobby. “We had two totally different color palettes. In the guestrooms we went with bright blues, greens and oranges. In the lobby, we chose a more sophisticated, monochromatic scheme accented with black and red,” said Amy Locke, the designer for Hatchett Hospitality who led the team on the project.
Locke explained the lobby was designed to be both stylish and inviting to guests. “We wanted every space in the lobby to have a purpose. Lobbies are becoming multi-functional spaces, so we wanted to make sure there was enough furniture,” she said, adding that there was a focus on creating small, intimate seating arrangements. “We made little ‘alcoves’ that each had clusters of seating.”
To complement the sleek red and black tones in the public space, dark wood case goods were selected. “The furniture is very modern with clean lines and the dark woods are very classic,” said Locke, adding a wood-paneled wall is one particular highlight of the space.
The modern décor was carried into the restaurant and bar. “We kept the contemporary theme and created a bright red accent wall behind the booths in the restaurant. It came out beautiful,” she said.
RESULT: Since it opened in late June, the Holiday Inn Dumfries has been very well received by its guests. “Going modern was the perfect choice for the hotel. Guests love it, especially the lobby,”?said Patel. “We’ve even had other developers come in to see what we’ve done and they’re very impressed.”
