Boutique Hotel Designed to Capture Pittsfield’s Historic Past

PITTSFIELD, MA—Main Street Hospitality Group will develop a new hotel on North Street located here. Scheduled to open in summer of 2015, Hotel on North will be a 45-room property featuring a mix of furnishings and decor to reflect its heritage as an early 20th century department store in downtown Pittsfield

Hotel on North will include two restaurants, a small media space for groups and two other smaller meeting facilities to accommodate intimate group meetings as well as a private space for events. The property will be managed by Main Street Hospitality Group, a management company based out of The Red Lion Inn, located in Stockbridge, MA.

“We are very excited about working with Main Street Hospitality on this project, which we hope will help revitalize the city that we love,” stated Laurie Tierney, Hotel on North owner and developer. Hotel on North, a locally operated, non-chain boutique hotel, will join the ongoing redevelopment of North Street and serve as a destination spot for business and leisure travelers as well as local residents.

Located at the former site of The Besse-Clarke Company department store that operated from 1910-1994, this historic building will offer a unique experience for travelers. The original buildings, known as the Burns Blocks (1883) and the Burns New Block (1890), were built by James M. Burns, a local merchant who established a home furnishing store in Pittsfield in the late 1870s. Both buildings represent the northward expansion of Pittsfield’s central business district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with both buildings named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Hotel on North is also an adaptive reuse of a historic building; its design will capture the sense of Pittsfield’s historic past. The exterior of the building will remain intact, while the interior will be adorned with a vintage motif.
